Stitching a Moment

This poem was inspired by The Legend of the Dipper a beloved folktale popularized by Carolyn Sherwin Bailey in 1906. While searching for meaningful stories to share with my children, I stumbled upon it again and was swept back into my own childhood. My grandmother read it to me often, and it became a part of me at a very young age. Rereading it, through tears and fond remembrance, I felt moved to write this poem. The connection may not be obvious to anyone but me, but I treasure the thread between that wonderful tale, my grandmother’s voice, and these words.

It’s a beautiful life

she said with a smile

With the eager and joyful anticipation of a child

Let’s write a story

or sing a sweet song

you know that these moments

don’t last for long

Let us enjoy them and sew them

into our heart

Keeping them with us when we drift apart

She sat there sewing

taking it in

Seemingly silly with her jovial grin

Eyes squinted as they passed

creases furrowed in brows

She kept on sewing

ignoring the crowed

content to bask in

appreciation of the now

When the moment ended

and as she tied the last knot

she thanked the stars

for a stitch in time

sewn into the fabric

of her heart
